How does HypnoBirthing® achieve such great results?
HypnoBirthing® philosophy believes that childbirth
is inherently comfortable.
The discomfort is caused by fear and anxiety. This causes us to, for example:
- tense our bodies
- tighten shoulders
- tighten our jaws
- clench our fists
- breathe shallow
These are all symptoms of an adrenaline release in the body, readying us for fight or flight. This is a crucial mechanism for fighting danger. However, it has no place in birthing.
Nature designed birth to work, but it is designed to work in an environment where the body does not sense danger. The body cannot differentiate between the situations that cause the adrenaline response – whenever it gets the adrenaline response it thinks ‘danger’ and shuts down everything else except those muscles that allow us to fight or run – it even shuts down birth. So, if you are trying to birth a baby and ‘pushing’ against muscles that are closing, you will feel a great amount of discomfort and pain.
HypnoBirthing® works by teaching you to relax and connect with your birthing body, helping to release the magical birthing hormones. When this happens, the adrenaline response is minimised. The birthing hormone, oxytocin, flows through your bloodstream, makes you feel good and allows the uterine muscles to do their job to open up the cervix and birth your baby comfortably.
In nature when mammals are birthing, if they sense danger, their bodies will shut birth down until the mammal has reached a comfortable & safe place to recommence the birthing process. The same is true for humans. Only when we are trying to birth in the face of our bodies thinking ‘danger’ does birth become a dramatic, medical event. This starts the whole cascade of interventions, like induction, pain medications and even perhaps a surgical birth.
Birthing calmly using a whole toolkit of wonderful relaxation techniques, is comfortable and safe. Nature designed the body to birth. The body has millions of years of evolutionary knowledge in its DNA, telling it exactly what to do to birth a baby, just like it knows how to provide a comfortable environment to nurture and grow a baby in the womb.
We just have to keep our mind (which creates a false sense of danger that the body perceives as real) from getting in the way. HypnoBirthing®’s self-hypnosis techniques teach us to quieten the mind, connect with our baby and let the body do what its been doing for centuries.
Safer, easier, more comfortable and natural birth!
So much more than a birthing class; the kind of support you are getting is a comprehensive approach to natural birth and the HypnoBirthing® method.
HypnoBirthing® – The Mongan Method – is a unique method of relaxed, natural childbirth, enhanced by self-hypnosis techniques (Relaxation.) It allows women to use their natural instincts to bring about a safer, easier, more comfortable birthing. Emphasis is placed on pregnancy and childbirth, as well as on pre-birth parenting and the consciousness of the pre-born baby.
For most of their lives, women have been inundated with the negative stories of other women’s birth experiences. Many people, even strangers, want to tell us the horrors of giving birth. We have been conditioned to believe that excruciating pain is associated with labor; and because of this, women today hold an unprecedented fear of giving birth. This extreme fear causes our bodies to become tense, and that tension prohibits our bodies from easily performing a normal physiological function. The result is exactly what we feared most-long, painful birthing or unnecessary intervention.
People who are drawn to this method of childbirth desire to give birth confidently and as calmly, safely, and gently as possible, whether they have chosen to birth in a hospital, a birthing center or at home. Until HypnoBirthing®, this kind of birthing almost seemed unattainable for the general population.
Through a very simple program of self-hypnosis and education, healthy, low-risk women, as well as women who need medical assistance because of special circumstances, learn to dismiss fear-based stories, misinformation, and birthing myths; and they are helped to see birth as normal. They learn to trust that their bodies know how to bring their babies into the world in the calm and gentle way that Nature intended.

Hypnosis is a state of deep relaxation and deep focus. Most of us go into a state of hypnosis almost daily. For example; daydreaming, while watching a movie, reading a book. It is that state we go in when we are so deeply engrossed in an activity that we lose track of time. This is the purpose of self hypnosis in birthing. In labour, your focus will be on staying relaxed and open to birth your baby. Hypnosis is basically a relaxed focus.
You usually go into and out of hypnosis gently (i.e. it is not a sudden change in your state of mind or focus – its a gradual, continuous path). The path to hypnosis is similar to the path into normal sleep.
Hypnosis works very well for therapeutic purposes as well as for birthing because in this very relaxed state, the conscious mind quietens and the subconscious mind is more accessible. The subconscious mind is very open to suggestion and the carefully worded scripts that are used in HypnoBirthing® are designed to build confidence, keep you calm, tune out unwanted stimuli and thoughts.
All hypnosis is self-hypnosis. This relaxed state is achieved by your own free will, even when facilitated by a therapist.
In a hypnotized state, you are:
- Totally conscious
- A consenting participant
- Fully in control
- Comfortably relaxed
- Aware of your surroundings and what is happening around you
